Split finally happens

Welcome to the new diary of mine!

After 1,5 year from a first post about the idea of splitting my diary into halfs, it finally happens.

From today, I’ll have two separate blogs, one for private, one for professional. You’re just viewing the latter one. I hope you find it stylish.

why:

  • People tend to confuse my personal blog posts with my professional posts. I don’t want anyone reading my position on politic issues connect it with Flock, Mozilla or any other technology I’m related to.
  • It’s easier to split it into two separated blogs than to maintain categories. See, those are two really very different worlds. The reader’s profile of both is very different.
  • I like the idea of keeping my techie issues in one place, not separated by pictures from my holidays.
  • As long as I was a volunteer or a dev, there was no risk for the brand’s perception. Now, the situation changes (more hints soon), and I don’t want to get more frustrated every time a journalist misuses my words.

how:

  • This professional diary gets a new home: http://diary.braniecki.net. All personal stuff goes to http://blog.braniecki.net. I know the origins of word diary and blog, but the world has changed since then…
  • I updated my old diary.e-gandalf.net to WordPress trunk (2.3 alpha), and exported data. Then I uploaded it to both diary and blog at braniecki.net and removed personal posts from diary, and proffesional from blog.

tips for others who’d like to migrate(export and import) data between different wordpress instances:

  • WordPress export works with posts, comments and pages. All uploaded files, plugins, themes, settings, accounts, and blogroll has to be moved manually.
  • WordPress export and import can take more memory than is allowed. Just put those lines:
    set_time_limit(0);
    ini_set("memory_limit","24M");

    at the beginning of files export.php and import.php in wp-admin directory before you export/import data.

other changes:

  • Updated to WordPress tip. I’m going to keep synced with releases and both blogs will get updated at the same time.
  • New themes. I hope you like this one cause I love it 🙂 I’m going to work on it a bit in the near future. Theme from blog.braniecki.net will get more modifications in the near future.
  • I plan towork more on the readability of my posts. Using formatting to make it easier to read the whole thing.
  • I’ll be moving from categories to tags.
  • Please, notice the small open/close button in top right corner of the white sheet. It opens topbar 🙂

commenting:

  • There were a lot of questions regarding my comment approval policy. I’ll write down the rules somewhere next to comment box later
  • I’m using the policy of “first comment has to be approved” so whenever you change your email address, your comment goes to moderation queue. It worked pretty well on diary.e-gandalf.net.
  • I’m also using Aksimet.

next steps:

  • Get feedback from you 🙂
  • add OpenID support
  • reanalyze the situation and consider other plugins 🙂

Help me with the feedback thing. How do you like it? What would you suggest?

p.s. kudos goes to WordPress team!!! 🙂
