I just downloaded Opera 8.0 for Linux, I just launched it, and I just had to confirm three windows with some strange questions about license, my GUI and type of ads I’d like to see before I was able to use the browser.
Blake’s grandma won’t be happy…
I made a short review of preferences. They use very similar pref panel to to what we’re doing for Firefox 1.1, I don’t like it in Firefox, I don’t like it here. They also took the same option in Tools menu as we have for 1.1 for cleaning personal data, but they named it better – “Delete private data”. Firefox’s “Sanitize” is a L10N nightmare.
Third thing that is new (Update: It’s not new in Opera, it’s only me seeing it for the first time) in Opera and will be in Firefox 1.1 is Reporter Tool, for reporting problems with broken sites. The difference is that their tool is very small – one line comment, “major/minor/unusable” type. Our tool is much more complex. (Update: FWIK this tool will be simplified or turned off in final build)
I can guess that their tool is more about problems with websites, while ours is more about bugs in Gecko.
They also added (comparing to 7.x) some popup box under address bar. I don’t like it, I won’t use it, but I believe that it might be usable for others.
What I’m happy about in new Opera is their SVG support (which will be also in Firefox 1.1 ;)), what I’m not happy is that they still didn’t find courage to identify as Opera…
Overall it seems for me that most of UI changes are very similar in both Opera 8 and Firefox 1.1, it proves that cooperation between our organizations is good.
Opera 8 seems to be the same old, good browser with very fast engine, with very complex UI which does not fit to any OS style. Opera users will be happy.

Blake’s grandma doesn’t use Linux for sure 😉

What about Fx EULA, prefered way of installation, etc. I feel some kind of trolling in your text 😉

Probably Blake’s grandma would be happy with the Opera one 😉

Ah, on MacOSX there is no strange window on launch?
> What about Fx EULA, prefered way of installation, etc
I see a clear difference between installator wizard, and browser. Almost every application on my OS goes this way to split this, afaik Windows and MacOSX apps too. So it’s an example of what I talked about in point “not fit any OS style”.

I’m not sure if our tool will be in final 1.1. But yes, I absolutely agree that Blake’s grandma would be happy with the Opera one. As I said – our tool has different goals.

LOL. They took it again???
This option is there for ages. Well, actually it was located in the File menu in Opera 5, 6 and 7, then it was moved to the Tools menu in times of Opera 7.5.
So yes, we’ve got one more exciting (still not implemented) Firefox feature stolen by the ones having the Firefox comlex. LOL again, may you be happy!

ok, Thanks for clearing this out.
> So yes, we’ve got one more exciting (still not implemented)
It is already implemented in Firefox, sorry…

And you’re one of my biggest provements.
Calm down, I never ever said in this post who invented it where, I’m overall not interested in analyzing who invented what first, neither Blake’s grandma is. I’m more that happy to see those in Opera and I’m happy to say that we’re working on them for Firefox.
Yes I was wrong saying that it’s new in Opera 8, nothing more…
> Ah, on MacOSX there is no strange window on launch?
No, there isn’t. EULA agreement is part of installation process, same as Opera for Windows. Only Opera for Linux behave in a different way.
> I see a clear difference between installator wizard, and browser.
Common user don’t care where the installation process ends. The Opera questions are part of first-run configuration so common users probably consider it as the part of installation process, because Opera starts right after installation.

You’re wrong. There is no standard how application should be installed. Many systems, especially Linux distributions, have many different application managment systems fot processes like installation, uninstallatios, etc. Even on MacOS X many programs can be installed in a different particular ways.
